Need a new car? October is a good time to buy local.
You may be dreading it, but if the hunt for a new vehicle looms and you just can’t bring yourself to step out onto the lot – think again.

According to DCH Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Temecula general manager Eric Willis, when it comes to getting a good deal on a new or used car, October is prime buying time for the battered consumer.

“I think it’s always a good time when the end of model year approaches. The 2012 models are coming and that makes it a high rebate environment,” said Willis.

October tends to be a good month for consumers because rebates are competitive and the selection of 2011 models is plentiful, Willis said.

But, for folks looking for more than just a great deal, Willis said that buyers need to do their homework.

“I would recommend (that buyers) research the dealer ahead of time. The online review sites give consumers the ability to see how dealerships actually handle their customers,” Willis said, noting that a good car-buying experience extends beyond the sale and purchase of the vehicle.

Willis also said that when purchasing a used car, inventories can usually be accessed online before you even arrive on the lot, and most reputable dealerships will have Car Fax capabilities.

Most important, said Willis, is to keep your purchases local whenever possible.

“I always suggest buying from local dealerships because it helps to support the local economy,” Willis said, noting DCH Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Temecula’s support of area youth baseball clubs, in turn.

Additional considerations when purchasing a new vehicle include:
  • Gas mileage: Think about the number of miles you travel in a day and how much it will cost to get there.
  • Maintenance: As cars get more high-tech, be sure that you are aware of any specialized service needs that may drive up the cost.
  • Warranty: Don’t hesitate to ask questions about your new vehicle’s warranty and its policy for covering repairs, maintenance, and even theft.
  • Resale: The projected value of your car is an important consideration down the line.
