Chrysler Heritage - The Evolution of a Logo

Though it’s been about 75 years since Oliver Clark last punched a time card at Chrysler, his influence on Chrysler Group LLC can still be felt today. How can that be? Here’s a short lesson in Chrysler history:

Oliver Clark was one of eighteen men comprising Walter P. Chrysler’s original team. In 1924, that team rolled out the Chrysler Six, a groundbreaking vehicle and forerunner to future Chrysler successes like the current 300. Not only did Clark play a role in vehicle engineering, but he was responsible for designing the original Chrysler logo as well as the silver-winged radiator cap, two iconic symbols that Chrysler fans from all generations now associate with their favorite brand.

Clark’s original designs have undergone a fascinating transformation since 1924. Sometimes favoring the seal and ribbon, sometimes the silver wings, the logo is always, no matter what the year, a tribute to pioneers like Oliver Clark, who helped set things in motion with that first Chrysler Six.

The Chrysler logo and wings, 1928-1929.

While designing the radiator cap for the Chrysler Six, Oliver Clark found his inspiration in Roman mythology. The wings are said to symbolize the speed of the Roman god Mercury. As for the original Chrysler logo, it’s comprises a “seal of approval” and a state-fair-like ribbon, two things Clark considered symbols of quality.

This winged emblem from 1951 is a not-too-distant relative to the present day Chrysler logo.

The combination of seal and wings was revived in the 1990s.

The current Chrysler logo is, in our opinion, one of the most striking to date.

Leather to Come Standard in all Chrysler 300s

A leather interior in a vehicle is a sign of luxury—that’s common knowledge. What you may not know is that beginning with model year 2013, each Chrysler 300 that rolls off the assembly line will come standard with leather seating.

How is that a change? The base model 300 is soon to fall in line with its higher-priced Chrysler compatriots in terms of luxury. Yet despite the addition of leather to an already well-equipped interior, the baseline model will remain true to its goal of providing excellent value for an extremely affordable price.

Considering the good news, it might be time to brush up on proper leather care. After all, the new 2013 Chrysler 300s are poised to hit the dealerships, and that means one very special car, leather-trimmed seats and all, is that much closer to being yours.
  • To remove small particles of dirt and dust that can, in time, begin to scratch and wear away at the leather-trimmed upholstery, be sure to wipe down your leather-trimmed seats as needed with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Try to get in the habit of cleaning your leather trim every time you wash your car. Regular cleaning will help extend the life of your leather-trimmed interior in your Chrysler 300.
  • Note that the Chrysler 300 owner manual warns against using “polishes, oils, cleaning fluids, solvents, detergents, or ammonia-based cleaners to clean your leather upholstery.”
  • We recommend using only cleaners specifically recommended for leather care, such as MOPAR® Total Clean. Be sure to always use the product as indicated by the label.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Park in garages or shaded areas as much as possible or use a sun blocker. Too much direct sunlight can lead to fading; it can also hasten the drying out of leather and cause it to crack.

Alpine and Vapor: special-edition themes complement the 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT

The Grand Cherokee SRT has been a favorite among fans since its debut in 2006. Since then, the capable and powerful sport-tuned SUV has been increasingly refined to rival the world's top performance-luxury vehicles. For 2013, SRT expands Grand Cherokee offerings with the inclusion of the Vapor and Alpine special editions, designed to make a visual impact on streets and tracks alike.

The 2013 Vapor and Alpine editions augment the proven Grand Cherokee SRT's stunning appearance with the addition of 20-inch five-spoke forged wheels finished in Black Vapor Chrome with gloss black center caps. Brilliant Black graces the Vapor's exterior, while the Alpine is finished in Bright White - a new color for the Grand Cherokee SRT lineup. The Jeep hood badge and Grand Cherokee door badges are exchanged in favor of polished black lettering. Each vehicle receives black grille inserts housed within black grille surrounds. The rear step pad is finished in black continuing the understated theme, while the light bar receives the same treatment. The SRT badge found on the tailgate is also tweaked, featuring black as the accent color rather than red.

The Alpine and Vapor are limited to just 400 examples each. Contact DCH Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Temecula for further information on ordering one of these special-edition 2013 Grand Cherokee SRTs.

Three Chrysler Group Vehicles Earn Honors From Autobytel and AutoPacific

The Jeep® Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger are winners of AutoPacific’s 2012 Ideal Vehicle Awards based on owners' ratings of their 2012 cars and trucks.

“Winning awards for Jeep and Dodge vehicles based on customer feedback is very gratifying,” said Doug Betts, Senior Vice President – Quality, Chrysler Group. “Recognition by the customers proves we take consumer input very seriously in all the vehicles we design and build at Chrysler.”

The Ideal Vehicle Awards are based on owner ratings of 15 key attributes of their 2012 vehicles after 90 days of ownership. Measures evaluated by customers include power and acceleration, ride and handling, interior roominess and cargo space. More than 75,000 vehicle owners were surveyed by AutoPacific and were asked if they would change characteristics of their vehicles.

Praised for its smoothness on-road, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee claimed top honors in the Mid-Size SUV category. Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most-awarded SUV ever and delivers premium on-road performance while maintaining the Jeep brand’s legendary four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand two-speed transfer case and towing capability. It offers a driving range of more than 550 miles, superb on-road ride and handling, a world-class interior cabin, more than 45 safety and security features, and a variety of advanced technology features.

The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with three 4x4 systems, and with either a 290 horsepower Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 or an available 360 horsepower 5.7-liter V-8 engine.

Approximately 90 percent or more of Charger owners rated the Charger’s exterior size, passenger roominess, cargo space, ride and handling and ease of getting in and out of the vehicle as ideal. A great majority of owners, 80 percent or more, also appreciate the Charger’s interior lighting, driver’s seat comfort, tires, interior storage compartments and safety features.

In addition to its iconic Dodge styling and spacious, finely crafted, easy to access interior, the Dodge Charger offers performance that is unmatched in its class. Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com editors named the Chrysler Group’s all-new 2013 Dodge Dart as a pick for the “10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000.”

Vehicles chosen for the list were judged on two criteria — fun-to-drive and fun-to-own, which are the deciding factors of what the editors freely admit is a very subjective “cool factor.”

The all-new Dodge Dart topped the list as the coolest car under $18,000.

“The Dodge Dart’s enticing combination of style, performance, features and value have earned it the top spot in our 2012 coolest cars list,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “With exceptional interior space and loads of personalization potential, the all-new Dart will definitely make its presence felt in the ultra-competitive compact sedan segment.”

With an available fun-to-drive 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine, great ride and handling characteristics compliments of the Alfa Romeo-based chassis, innovative interior style featuring high-quality materials, splashes of color, like Ruby Red and Citrus Peel, and cool technology not found in the segment, like the available class-exclusive 8.4-inch Uconnect Touch Screen and 7-inch thin film transistor (TFT) customizable gauge cluster, as well as class-leading safety features, such as 10 standard air bags, and innovative style, including available class-exclusive LED “racetrack” taillamps and integrated dual exhaust, the 2013 Dodge Dart sets a new standard in the compact car segment.

“We are extremely proud that the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart was recognized as the coolest car under $18,000,” Reid Bigland, President and CEO – Dodge Brand said. “Kbb.com is one of the leading sites for consumers researching vehicles, so to have the Dart’s combination of style, value and the exhilarating driving experience recognized by the editors is a huge honor.”

Warner Bros. Pictures and the Chrysler brand have teamed up to bring fans the opportunity of a lifetime surrounding the July 20th release of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the much-anticipated conclusion to the blockbuster Dark Knight trilogy. Today marks the launch of the “Imported from Gotham City” contest, allowing fans to create an original co-branded TV spot featuring these two iconic brands. Director/writer/producer Christopher Nolan will select the winning spot, which will debut on television around the release of the film.

Contestants will have two weeks to create their “Imported from Gotham City” original commercial utilizing a suite of assets, including Chrysler 300 car footage, film footage and music stems from the trailer that contestants can remix for their spot. At the conclusion of the contest, a gallery of submissions will go live on Saturday, June 30, kicking off a four-day public voting period when fans can weigh-in on their favorite Gotham City collaboration.

The top three finalists will be announced online and Christopher Nolan will personally choose the winner.

"We're excited for the opportunity to tap into the creative community online and allow those who participate to showcase their talent and passion. We look forward to seeing what unique spots people produce," says Nolan.

The winning spot will be determined by a number of judging criteria, including public vote, originality, creativity, memorability and brand effectiveness. Warner Bros. and Chrysler will debut the winning commercial on national television the week of the film’s release - watch for specific date and airing details to be announced shortly. The winner will receive a trip to Hollywood to finish their spot alongside a professional editor before traveling to New York City to attend the red carpet premiere screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” on Monday, July 16.

Playing off Chrysler brand’s “Imported from Detroit” advertising campaign, the contest pushes the realm of the user-generated contest to a new level, allowing fans to take to the driver’s seat and test their creative skills within the world of Gotham City.

Apart from the winning contest spot, Chrysler will unveil another 30-second, co-branded television spot titled “Imported from Gotham City” in celebration of the partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures. Directed by Stacy Wall, the spot was designed and shot to look and feel similar to the world of the “The Dark Knight Rises.” Featuring a 2012 Chrysler 300, the spot will make its broadcast debut on Tuesday, June 19, on the NBC network. A 60-second spot will also run online. Once live, both spots will be available on the Chrysler brand YouTube channel at www.YouTube.com/Chrysler.

“The 2012 Chrysler 300 featured in this marketing and advertising campaign was created intentionally to look as if it could be driven on the streets and fit in to the nightlife of Gotham City; it’s clearly a vehicle that stands out and makes one take notice,” said Saad Chehab, President and CEO – Chrysler Brand, Chrysler Group LLC.

For fans of the film, “Imported from Gotham City” merchandise including t-shirts and hats will be available for purchase at Chrysler’s “Imported from Detroit” site at www.ifdstore.com.
